If you are more comfortable in English, you should take the GMAT or the GRE. If you are French-speaking, you should choose the TAGE-MAGE.

GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST (GMAT)

The GMAT is used internationally. The test, in English, lasts approximately 4 hours. It measures general reasoning and verbal and analytical skills, and thus certain skills required to succeed in management programs.

The GMAT is offered in hundreds of institutions around the world, all year long. Visit the official GMAT website to find the location nearest to you, learn about costs and register for the test. We recommend that you take the test several weeks ahead of the IM application deadline.

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)

TEST D’APTITUDE AUX ÉTUDES DE GESTION (TAGE-MAGE)

The TAGE-MAGE is an assessment and selection tool for French-speakers seeking admission to a business school. The test is approximately 2.5 hours in duration and is designed to evaluate your skills in three areas: problem-solving, verbal skills and logical reasoning. The test comprises 90 multiple-choice questions divided into 6 sections (15 questions each). For more information on this test, visit the official TAGE-MAGE website.

Candidates who have taken the TAGE-MAGE test at a location other than HEC Montréal must make sure to allow HEC Montréal to access their results.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE TEST?

You are permitted to take the test once only every semester. A candidate can pass the test once between January 1 and June 30 and once between July 1 and December 31 of a given year. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you prepare adequately before taking the TAGE-MAGE. You can prepare by

ENGLISH TEST

If English is not your first language, you will be required to take one of the following two tests:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) assesses your ability to use and understand English in a university setting. It measures written and oral comprehension and expression. University code: 4371
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS), administered by the University of Cambridge, the British Council and IDP Education Australia, tests your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in English. The test is available in two formats: academic format and general training format. If you decide to take this test, you must take the Listening, Academic Reading, Academic Writing and Speaking modules.
