Maria Isabel is a composer born in Bogotá, Colombia who also holds a degree in Musical Pedagogy from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional.
She is the founder and head of MISI PRODUCCIONES, a trademark in Colombian entertainment, with the only musical theatre school and production company in the country, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2017.
Children, teens and professional artists have been part of the company’s big-time original work and international repertoire productions.
Since 1987, the Company’s annual Christmas shows have become a tradition.
MISI PRODUCCIONES has produced over 35 musicals throughout its 30 years.
Maria Isabel has composed over 2000 songs. She writes the music and lyrics for all the original productions and translates the majority of those taken from the international repertoire into Spanish. Among the most well-known productions are: the first authorized Spanish version of “West Side Story”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Aladdin” (first Disney Theatricals’ musical in Colombia) “Oliver”, “Annie”, “Sound of Music” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” (not her translation). Original productions include: “La Más Grande Historia Jamás Cantada” (The Greatest Story Ever Sung)”, “El Guardián de la Navidad” “A Tribute to Michael Jackson”, “Gaitán, el Hombre a quien Amé” (first musical based on Colombian history), “El Peter Pan de Misi”, “La Noche de Navidad”, “Son las 12 es Navidad”, “Cartas a Papá Noel” and many others. The company’s long history and enviable reputation have given it great credibility both nationally and internationally.
Its international tours have taken the company to important cultural venues around the world such as the Jackie Gleason Theater for the Performing Arts in Miami; the Carnival Center (today, the Adrienne Archt Center) for the Performing Arts, also in Miami; the world’s fairs of Expo Sevilla 92 and Expo Hannover 2000; and the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, where the company celebrated its 25th anniversary by performing its original work “La Más Grande Historia Jamás Cantada”, (The Greatest Story Ever Sung) which won 3 ACE awards, including Best Musical in Spanish.
Maria Isabel Murillo was the award-winner / honoree of the “Gerardo Arellano” medal given out by the Ministry of Education in recognition of her contributions to the cultural field. She is also the promoter of “Proscenio Arts District”, the first approved Urban Renewal Plan in Bogotá. This complex, designed by Foster & Partners, will become an important architectural icon in Latin America and plans to open its doors to the public in April 2021.
The MISI School of Performing Arts offers classes to students from all ages at two adjacent locations: MISI CREATIVE CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP for pregnant women and babies from 2 months to children 5 years old, and the MISI SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS, for children, teens and high school graduates wishing to do musical theatre professionally (through a PFI Comprehensive Education Program).
